We’ve recently released a low-cost Wi-Fi IoT Module, SX-ULPGN. The module is less than $10 MSRP and features a hostless mode for stand-alone IoT applications, which eliminates your MCU cost. This means that you can add Wi-Fi connectivity to your IoT solution and run it natively for just $10. The SX-ULPGN evaluation kit for this product is available through the Arrow Website for $49.

When you add Wi-Fi to an IoT application using SX-ULPGN, you can offload your network stack and network security is taken care of through the module. The module features 800KB on-chip RAM memory and 2MB of Flash, making it suitable for most IoT applications. The module also has a wide variety of peripherals that support these applications, such as analog-to-digital converters (ADC) for sensing, pulse-width-modulators (PWM) to drive LEDs or motors, and general-purpose-inputs-outputs (GPIOs) for interrupts or buttons, etc. The SX-ULPGN is an ultra-low power Wi-Fi module with internal 1.2 and 1.8 V regulators, making it suitable for battery-operated devices.

The new SX-ULPGN is a low-cost, ultra low-power Wi-Fi module designed specifically for use in high-volume embedded wireless products including smart home devices, systems used in factory automation, wearables, and medical devices.

The SX-ULPGN features a hostless mode that eliminates an external MCU to achieve the lowest system cost and ultra low-power. In hostless mode, the module’s internal CPU can act as a host with the application running from the internal memory. Peripherals and sensors connect to the CPU using any of the available interfaces, including UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, ADC, PWM, and GPIO. In addition, using our UART AT command option, you can quickly add a serial-to-Wi-Fi converter for existing MCU-based designs without porting any host driver.

EN 300 328 covers wideband data systems operating in the 2.4GHz ISM band, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee. This is the harmonized standard against which manufacturers must issue their Declaration of Conformity for the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) Directive.

Since there were significant changes between ETSI’s V1.7.1 and V1.8.1, it’s natural that electronics manufacturers are wondering what changes are in store for V1.9.1. The latest update, EN 300 328 V1.9.1, is now published and available to download free of charge from the ETSI website.
